About the Artwork

This painting is one of many crowded beach scenes made by the American artist Maurice Prendergast. The rough texture of the brushwork and the vibrant colors indicate the artist's interests in the aesthetics of French modernism and medieval mosaics. During trips to France and Italy, Prendergast closely observed Paul Cézanne's constructed brushstrokes, George Seurat's pointillist technique, and the stone and glass mosaics of Venice.
