About the Artwork

Early in his career, Philadelphia native William Glackens was known for dark, gritty scenes of urban life. Around 1908, however, his palette began to shift toward the bright colors we see here, reflecting the influence of European modernists like Henri Matisse. The scene is set at Brighton Beach Race Track in Brooklyn.
