About the Artwork

Cézanne kept dozens of household objects in his studio that he would organize into different still-life combinations. Here he mixes together a few familiar studio props—a red cloth, a rum bottle with a straw binding, and a light blue pitcher—with potted geraniums from the greenhouse at his father's estate. Cézanne often painted in the greenhouse during the winter, when it was too cold to work outside.
